AN ISLE of Wight drink-driver who ran a red light, drove himself to the court building after being arrested.

Kieran Galvin, of New Street, Newport, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday (January 6).

The 22-year-old admitted drink driving, and driving without insurance, in Newport, on December 18 of last year.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court police had seen Galvin drive through a red light on Newport High Street.

His Vauxhall Astra was stopped, and Galvin was breathalysed and arrested.

At the police station, he registered a breath-alcohol reading of 80, when the legal limit is 35.

Further checks revealed he had also been driving without insurance.

Galvin, representing himself, said he made a stupid decision on the day and it wouldn’t happen again.

He said he had been in a low state of mind at the time and had since secured employment.

Galvin revealed he had driven himself to the court building, despite living a ten-minute walk away, and asked magistrates what he should do with his car.

He was told he shouldn’t drive again under any circumstances and should arrange for his car to be collected.

Galvin was fined £270 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £108 surcharge.

He was disqualified from driving for 22 months.
