AN ISLE of Wight pub has been closed and will undergo a major refurbishment before a planned reopening in Spring, with hopes that the 'current team can reach an agreement' with the new employers.
The Griffin, on Godshill High Street, closed its doors yesterday (Monday, January 1) following the expiry of the current lease.
Under the new stewardship of Stonegate Group, the pub will be further developed and will become one of its managed houses, under the Stonehouse banner.
Set within a grade II listed building, The Griffin will remain closed while redevelopment takes place, and hopes to reopen its doors in the Spring after a major transformation.
Planning permission, submitted to the Isle of Wight Council on December 14, proposes internal changes and redecoration works, including a pergola shelter, garden works and outside repainting.
The proposal also includes a non-illuminated facia sign, one illuminated post sign, two low-level illuminated post signs and wall lanterns.
The former landlord, who leaves the pub following the lease expiry, said: “In the seven years, it has been my pleasure to 'guide the ship'.
“I have worked with a fantastic team and met some wonderful customers, who I am sure will help support the pub when it reopens.
“Hopefully, the current team can reach an agreement with their possible new employer to continue to give the pub the same level of service and quality it deserves.”
