THE next phase of works on Ryde Transport Interchange begins today (Monday), which means new traffic arrangements.

Island Roads says it is moving into a period of concentrated activity to get a significant proportion of the works completed before the festive period.

During the coming weeks, workers will be focussing heavily on completing the new access and exit road to the pier.

They will also be re-aligning the pedestrian crossing outside the King Lud pub and working on associated drainage work.

This means some new traffic arrangements come into effect.

“For approximately three weeks, the southern lane of the Esplanade (normally used by westbound traffic) will be closed between George Street and Union Street,” said a spokesperson for Island Roads.

“Traffic travelling in a westbound direction will be diverted via George Street, Cross Street and Union Street.

“Access will remain for business deliveries where safe to do so.

“Access to the pier will remain via the new inbound pier access road, with vehicles leaving the pier via the old pier access road.

“St Thomas Street will reopen in both directions.

“The switch to the second phase of this aspect of the project is later than previously communicated due to factors including the ongoing adverse weather.

“While we make every effort to deliver the scheme as per the published programme, the schedule is subject to change particularly at this time of year when severe weather can be expected, as the works site is extremely exposed to the elements.

“The work to reconfigure the bus station is ongoing, with temporary bus stands now in operation at the Esplanade

“Routes 4, 9 and 37 are now by the Rose Garden on the Esplanade, while routes 2, 3, 8, Island Coaster and the Downs Breezer are outside Solent Court on the Esplanade on the opposite side of the road.”
