Having read the letter entitled "Parking Woes" (CP, 11-11-22), I can completely agree with the writer with regards to the car park adjoining Sea Street and Little London, Newport.
A month ago, I had occasion to use this "facility" to park while I attended a meeting.
Attempting to pay, I noticed that neither of the two machines would accept coins.
One machine was out of order, and I wrestled to try and follow the instructions on the remaining machine.
- Read letter to the editor: Back in the 1970s, the ferry service was limited but totally reliable
Each time I thought I'd succeeded in working it out, a sign popped up reading "Transaction Cancelled".
I attempted to pay four times, eventually giving up in despair, and heading off to my meeting, 15 minutes late, and feeling very angry.
A few days later, I received a letter demanding £100 fine to be paid (£60 only if paid before a deadline!). I replied with a £60 cheque and a fairly angry letter.
I saw from my bank statement that my cheque had been cashed well inside the deadline and thought no more about it.
Imagine my frustration when I later received a "reminder" letter telling me I still owed £100 (£60 only if paid before a deadline!)
I am now trying to calm down before I write to the company requesting an apology.
I will never use this car park again, and strongly advise anybody else not to either - it's a money trap.
I have noticed that the car park is nearly always empty. I wonder why? I was parked for 1 hour, 30 minutes.
