A SEVERE flood warning has been extended for the Eastern Yar area this evening (Monday), as further rain and showers are forecast.

The water level in the Eastern Yar at Langbridge and Alverstone remains ‘very high’ but is now falling at a rate of 1cm per hour, says the Environment Agency.

Since midnight, 7mm of rain has been recorded at Wroxall and 15mm at Knighton.

Out-of-bank flooding affecting gardens, roads, and access tracks in the affected areas will continue overnight.

Whilst property is not currently affected, further rains and showers are forecast this evening and throughout tomorrow (Tuesday), with up to 20mm expected.

If heavy rain does impact the river during this time, then levels will increase and could be higher than the peak water level recorded in the early hours of this morning, causing property flooding in Alverstone.

The Environment Agency will update the warning by 1pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a flood alert (not as severe as warning) remains in place until tomorrow for the Isle of Wight’s coastline, because high tide (at 10.15pm) will be higher than normal, due to unsettled weather, strong southerly force six or seven winds and large waves.

Expect spray and overtopping at Freshwater Bay, Sandown, Shanklin, Gurnard and Ryde.

The impacts on Cowes will be minimal, the Environment Agency said.
At 10.45am on Tuesday, there may be minor flooding on seafront roads in Yarmouth and Cowes.

Promising an update at 8am tomorrow, the organisation said: "At high tide, avoid parking, walking or driving at exposed seafront locations."
