AN ISLE of Wight church is hoping to raise funds to urgently repair its 'unstable' tower, following damage caused in storms earlier this year.

Newchurch All Saints Church tower is an iconic sight and landmark, visible for many miles.

Unfortunately, the timber is rotting, and the tower had become unstable, especially after the recent storms and high winds.

In February, a weathervane at the top of the tower became unattached during Storm Eunice, causing damage to the roof and prompting a safety hazard to people and property near the church.

This has since been restored and reinstated, covered by insurance.

The tower has recently been inspected and deemed unstable, hence why nearby residents may have realised no church bells have been ringing.

The work is urgent, with the first phase to stabilise the tower estimated to cost around £40,000 and the competition of the work to cost upward of £100,000.

Newchurch All Saints is applying for grants for the larger sum but hopes to proceed with the initial stabilisation by raising funds, hosting an appeal last week.
