AS THE Isle of Wight moves toward Remembrance Sunday, a number of special services and events are planned.
A poppy appeal has already been launched on the Island, and individuals and businesses are getting right behind it.
Clare Jones, community champion at Asda, was among those to erect a display in the store with the help of her colleagues.
"I wanted to do something that would stand out and make people think what Remembrance day is actually about," said Clare.
"We ended up with more than 750 poppies, all knitted, crocheted and felted, which is incredible.
"The display looks absolutely amazing — I can't stop smiling at it, it makes me very proud."
A special field of remembrance will once again be opened to the public at Carisbrooke Castle this month — to commemorate those in the uniformed services who lost their lives in service of their country.
The field was introduced in the Princess Beatrice Garden at Carisbrooke Castle in 2010.
This year it, moves to the Governesses’ Lawn, adjacent to the Princess Beatrice Garden.
A short service of remembrance, which members of the public are welcome to attend, will take place at the castle on Thursday, November 10, at 10.45am.
Crosses can be purchased at the castle, with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.
Refreshments at a small charge will be provided by the Women’s Institute.
Other events planned include:
- Friday, November 11 — Medina Marching Band Festival of Remembrance, Christ the King College.
- Sunday, November 13 — Remembrance Service, outside Newport Minster.
