Another week, another flurry of political news culminating with the resignation, this lunchtime, of Prime Minister Liz Truss.

She is preparing to leave 10, Downing Street within the week.

Her earlier statement means another leadership election looms, around six weeks after she was appointed PM, on September 6.

Today, the Isle of Wight County Press has been asking our local political leaders for their reactions to her departure.

Here's what Isle of Wight politicians are saying about Liz Truss's resignation...

Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has revealed he will back Penny Mordaunt, if she stands, saying he was sorry to see the PM go.

Isle of Wight Green Party parliamentary candidate and national education spokesperson, Vix Lowthion, said: "Quite simply - General Election. Now"

She added she was too polite to comment on Liz Truss's time as Prime Minister.

For the Isle of Wight Labour Party, former parliamentary candidate and current Isle of Wight Councillor, Richard Quigley, said: "It was inevitable that Liz Truss would resign.

"She had no mandate for the disastrous decisions she and her Chancellor made.

"It doesn't matter who replaces her as the Tories have revealed who they really are, there is no compassion for the people of this country, only concern for themselves. 

"The only way to restore the democratic process and trust in government, is for a general election to be held as soon as is possible.

"Even Conservative MPs agree."

Isle of Wight Conservative Party chairman, David Pugh, said he would express his view if party members are allowed to do so, adding he voted for Rishi Sunak in the previous leadership election.

He said 'depending on who the final two candidates are, it is likely that I would reach the same conclusion again, if he was one of those candidates.'

Of Liz Truss's tenure he said: "I’m glad it is over.

"She was not up to the job as Prime Minister and should never have been elected to the Party leadership.

"Even her supporters ended up being disappointed as she was unable to deliver the unrealistic pledges she made."

He does not think there should be a general election, because MPs were elected in 2019, for a five year term. 

He said: "Subject to a new Prime Minister being able to command the confidence of the House of Commons, this current term should continue."

The County Press has asked for a comment from Liberal Democrats on the Isle of Wight.

Steph Burgess Flux, Liberal Democrats IW chair, said: "It comes as no surprise that Liz Truss has been forced to resign after her chaotic, short premiership.

"The Conservative Party have completely lost direction, with the membership and MPs being completely at odds as to what they want out of their party. 

"Unfortunately, it is the people of this country who suffer whilst the government is in such disarray.

"It is time they did the decent thing and called for a general election, rather than putting us through another lengthy and disruptive leadership contest, which will inevitably land us with another incompetent with no mandate to govern."
