ISLE of Wight band Wet Leg have congratulated rapper Little Simz following her big win at the prestigious Mercury Music Prize.

The Island outfit lost out to the Islington-born musician in the album of the year category.

The 28-year-old took the £25,000 award for her fourth album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.

On Tuesday, she told the ceremony in London she was "overwhelmed and grateful" to receive the honour.

She went on to pay tribute to the other nominees, including Wet Leg, Harry Styles, Sam Fender and Self Esteem.

Speaking after the ceremony, Wet Leg described the star's album as "powerful", and said: "Her performance last night made me blub like fish.

"When we started Wet Leg just three years ago, we would never have thought our debut album would be up for a Mercury Prize alongside so many incredible artists.

"This past year has been filled with highs, lows, first times and lots and lots of running around the globe playing music.

"Last night was an opportunity for us to take stock as a band and to recognise just how far we’ve come."

The ceremony and performances were due to take to the stage back in September, but the entire event was cancelled at the last second, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, earlier that day.

Instead, the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, hosted the awards ceremony on Tuesday, and it was broadcast live on TV and radio.

Wet Leg had won a nomination for their self-titled album, which went to number one in April.
