A FLOATING object was suspected to be a mine by several members of the public.
But on close inspection, Yarmouth RNLI Lifeboat's volunteer crew discovered it was a wave data buoy.
The object had been spotted floating in the water off Hurst Castle, near the Isle of Wight.
At 12.pm, Yarmouth's RNLI was paged by Solent Coastguard to several reports from members of the public of a potential mine floating in the water.
The Severn Class All Weather Lifeboat (ALB) Eric and Susan Hiscock 17-25 left Yarmouth Harbour and was on scene within ten minutes.
The object was investigated by the crew and was found to be a wave data buoy.
Photos and details were then passed to Solent Coastguard for a more detailed inspection, who were happy with the crew’s assessment.
With no further action required, the lifeboat was stood down and returned to station.
Anyone with concerns about a person or objects in the water, should always report them by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard.
