A WOMAN died and two other people required medical treatment in a mystery boating incident off Cowes, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) have confirmed.

The Isle of Wight Police, in partnership with the MCA and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, have launched an investigation into the incident on The Solent yesterday afternoon (Saturday).

The police initially reported a woman fell overboard from a boat and was later pronounced dead.

Her next of kin were informed.

Since then, the MCA have confirmed not only was a woman pulled from the water, two other people on board her boat also required medical treatment, and a fourth crew member was taken ashore, unharmed.

The woman, aged 43, had been pulled from the sea unconscious by a Cowes Harbour Commission launch and was tken to Trinity Landing, where attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

The two other crew requiring medical treatment were taken to St Mary's Hospital, Newport, by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

“HM Coastguard received a report of a person overboard on a yacht with four people on board near Cowes," the MCA said in a statement this morning (Sunday).

"We sent Cowes RNLI lifeboat, Hamble independent lifeboat and Needles Coastguard Rescue Team, Hampshire Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

"One person was pulled from the water and two other people also needed medical treatment.

"All three were passed into the care of the ambulance service. The fourth was taken to shore.”

The emergency services were called out at 1.45pm, Cowes RNLI confirmed.
