AFTER the threat of enforcement action, works will soon be carried out to improve the appearance of the Grade II Listed Halifax building in Newport.
There have been several delays to the work, and the building has been described as an eyesore by residents.
George Chastney, of Cowes, told the County Press: "This is just another blow to the Island capital's High Street which is already blighted by too many empty shops.
"Surely the Halifax's upper floors, like those in many retail premises in this and other towns, would be better used as flats for some of the many people on the homes waiting list?"
A Halifax spokesperson said: “As the building has Grade II listed status, we need approval to make repairs.
"We are in discussions with the local authority and will begin works as soon as practical once the necessary permissions have been received."
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said: “Having twice received indications work would be carried out, it was not.
"The authority therefore advised the owners that enforcement action was likely to get the boards removed and repairs completed to the windows and masonry which are in poor condition.
“Confirmation has now been received that the works will commence in November this year.
“While the property falls within the boundary of the Newport High Street Heritage Action Zone, it is not being funded by the scheme but clearly such works, once completed, will contribute positively within the town centre and High Street Heritage Action Zone.”
