Southern Water has made more discharges off the Isle of Wight's coast, in recent days.

The use of outfall pipes is permitted in certain circumstances, where there is a fear the pipes system will become overwhelmed.

The utility firm insists what is pumped into the sea is 95 per cent rainwater.

Heavy rain overnight and this morning (Monday), prompted discharge off Cowes and Gurnard - via the Terminus Road 2 outfall pipe.

Meanwhile, on Friday, there were discharges at Appley Park Ryde Transfer, affecting Cowes and Ryde; the Sandown outfalls, near Whitecliff Bay, Bembridge and Yaverland; the Norton Transfer, at Totland and Colwell; The Point outfall, near Bembridge, Luccombe and Spring Vale; Albany Road, at East Cowes; and Egypt Point and Medina Road, off Cowes.

Not all the discharges were considered by Southern Water to be likely to impact bathing waters, due to tides and duration.

The use of outfall pipes by Southern Water is published HERE on its Beachbuoy site.

New regulations will come into force by 2023, including limiting the number of times outfall pipes can be used.
