Your kindly correspondent (CP online, 31-08-22) was quite right to highlight essential low traffic speeds recently.
This has brought dismaying forests of CCTV ANPR cameras all over Greater London — and it’s not just 5mph too fast, but, in “selective timed zones”, five minutes too late, and it’s a £120 ticket, or stray into a bus lane, or a yellow box junction, and the cameras will hit you in the wallet.
It is beyond road safety, it is a cynical rip-off for councils.
The Isle of Wight is gentler than that.
There is a huge opportunity on the Island for the police to initiate a Skilled Driver Opportunity scheme for young drivers, to inculcate road awareness and advanced motoring ability — road courtesy still shows your skill.
Perhaps give prize-winners an experience with the police drivers at Hendon, or a manufacturer such as Land Rover or Ford — with sponsorship from a local company?
And involving the Institute of Advance Motorists, now called RoadSmart.
