CHURCHES have tolled their bells across the Isle of Wight to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Guidance recommended tolling muffled bells for one hour from noon today (Friday).
For those that missed them, bells are expected to toll again at 5pm, in Shanklin.
Other protocols observed on the Island include flag posts flying flags at half-mast until the day of the funeral.
Parishes are also encouraged to open for prayer or special services, and to open books of condolences, following the announcement from Buckingham Palace.
In East Cowes, the town hall has opened one, and in Newport, mourners are being asked to lay flowers at Church Litten park.
The death of the Sovereign is one of the rare occasions when fully muffled bells are sounded — a technique to create an echo by fitting pads to both sides of the bell clapper.
