AN ISLE of Wight man who stole a Henry vacuum cleaner from Sainbury's has been ordered to pay more in court fees than if he'd paid for the item outright.
Luke Fauvel, of Queens Road, Shanklin, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday (September 2).
The 38-year-old admitted theft from a shop in Newport, on July 16.
Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court Fauvel stole a vacuum cleaner valued at £150 belonging to Sainsbury's in Newport.
The court heard Fauvel moved to the household aisle, selected a Henry vacuum cleaner and made an effort to leave the store without paying.
He was stopped outside the front door by staff and the vacuum cleaner was recovered.
Ms Miller said the offence involved a degree of planning, as Fauvel had removed the security tag.
Jim Osbourne, defending, said shortly after the offence, Fauvel had been taken to hospital due to prolific drug use and addiction. His ten days in hospital was a wake up call.
Fauvel has severe mental health problems, knew he was in the last chance saloon, and took the opportunity to get himself clean.
Magistrates fined Fauvel £120, with costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge.
