ISLE of Wight Royal Mail workers said they feel 'irked' and 'neglected' by their company, as they continued strike action today (Wednesday, August 31).
The strike comes as the Community Workers Union (CWU) shared that more than 115,000 postal staff will walk out and gather outside Royal Mail offices across the UK.
This period of strike action got underway on Friday (August 26).
Dave Hine, strike supervisor at Newport’s sorting office, said: “The strikes have happened today because Royal Mail has imposed a two per cent pay rise, putting it out to the press that it is a five per cent pay rise, but it is not.”
Picketers said it is not just pay that has led them to strike action but also added workloads, conditions and issues with shareholders.
Royal Mail made a profit of £758m last year, with the top three in the company earning hefty bonuses, leaving workers with no money available, Royal Mail workers told the County Press.
Dave continued: “We feel a little bit neglected. We worked throughout the pandemic over the past two years, and that’s the thanks we get.
“It irks people, shall we say.”
Further Royal Mail strikes are planned for the Island on Thursday, September 8 and Friday, September 9.
