AN APPEAL has been launched after a Southampton rugby player suffered a career-ending injury in a game against Ventnor on Saturday (August 27).
After tackling someone in the pre-season friendly, Eric Johnson snapped his hip in half and fractured his pelvis socket.
Eric plays second row, often called locks, a mobile and athletic position which includes carrying the ball and making tackles, as well as providing further power for the big push.
He is currently at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, requiring a full hip replacement and at least three months post-operation recovery.
- UPDATE: "I’ve never met a club so supportive, they didn’t have to go as far as they have" injured Eric tells the Isle of Wight County Press
During this time, Eric will only receive statutory sick pay from his work, and he has rent/bills to pay and a young son, Maxwell, to look after.
Ventnor Rugby Club has been keeping Eric company while he is still in hospital on the Island.
Former Southampton coach and friend of Eric’s, Mark Flowers, has set up a GoFundMe to help him through.
Mark said: "I hope that the rugby community can rally around and help a brother in need."
