Isle of Wight roads used by the Tour of Britain finale this September must be free of cars, we are being warned.

The final leg of the Tour will be on September 11,  when around 100 of the world’s best cyclists will take on the 150-kilometre route.

With the major cycling race just weeks away, the exact Tour of Britain route has been revealed - along with a requirement for residents to move their cars.

Competitors will hit speeds of around 40mph on sections of the course - which will weave round the Island, taking in Sandown, Cowes, Niton and Freshwater, Newport and more.

For safety reasons, roads are expected to have been cleared by 6pm on Saturday,  September 10 and restrictions will remain in place until the race passes the following day.

Longer closures will be necessary at the start on Ryde Seafront and along the finishing stretch — the Military Road at Chale to The Needles.

Cars left on the course will be removed and relocated and their owners will need to contact the Isle of Wight Council (on 01983 823800) to find out where theirs is.

There will also be a rolling road closure, lasting between 30 minutes and an hour, so riders can pass safely.
