This is a copy of a letter to Island Roads.

AFTER suggesting a few years ago that the Isle of Wight showcases its lovely new road surfaces by hosting a leg of the Tour de France, it’s with mixed feeling that I welcome the final stage of the Tour of Britain.

Amazing publicity for the Isle of Wight... an incredible boost to healthy living engagement, so why mixed feelings?

Victoria Avenue in Shanklin will see cyclists topping 50mph over a surface that is so uneven and worn that it rivals the cobbles of Paris, which are safer as they’re not on such a steep (therefore fast and dangerous) hill.

I know they’re pro cyclists, and can cope with all kinds of hazards, but wouldn’t it be a shame of the main headline of the day is: “Isle of Wight pot-holes wreak havoc on Tour of Britain?”
