THE SUN was out, and so were hundreds of revellers in Newport yesterday (Saturday, July 23) to mark the 100th anniversary of the town’s carnival.

Throughout the day around Newport, there was plenty going on, featuring the world-famous Titan the Robot, as seen on this year’s Britain’s Got Talent – who drew big crowds in St Thomas’ Square.

There were also market stalls from 9am, Island magician David Randini and a rousing performance by the Scots Guard Association at midday.

Organisers described the event as the biggest carnival Newport had seen in a decade, if not ever!

Fast forward to the main event of the day, the carnival parade, which got underway at 7pm.

Hundreds lined the streets with smiles as the parade travelled across Newport.

Even when the Green Goddess fire engine broke down in the middle of the parade on the High Street, the smiles continued as the audience jumped in and pushed the Goddess along its route.

The parade also featured the 250-strong ensemble, Shademakers, who performed at the Queen’s Jubilee Pageant in June.

Chair of Newport Carnival said: “I would personally, and on behalf of all involved in the parade, say THANK YOU!

“I would also like to thank you, the public.

“It’s been two years without a carnival, and you came out to support us in your hundreds.

“The reviews are awesome. Local businesses, thank you all.”
