ISLE of Wight churchgoer Sue Gayner is proud to reveal she finished her first book during Covid lockdown, and the proceeds are going to some of the poorest groups in Bulgaria.
Entitled Undaunted, it is a collection of writings — short accounts, poetry, stories — which reflect her journey from very difficult times to acceptance, and even joy.
Sue is a Christian, and attends True Vine church, Newport, which shines through very clearly in her book, now available from Amazon books.
The official launch was hosted by the New Holmwood Hotel, where £830 was raised and will go toward relief work in Bulgaria, and to refugees from Ukraine.
“I look at it now, hold it in my hand and think 'Did I really do that?’" said Sue, who had written for pleasure before, but had never had anything published.
“It’s a great feeling when you accomplish something new.
"Online, I noticed a challenge which kept coming up called ‘five day book challenge’ with Sue Sundstrom, of Accomplished Authors.
"I had five days free — it was during lockdown, after all — so I went for it.”
Sue has been involved for many years in missionary and practical projects in Bulgaria.
She is visiting again with a group in July, and all profits from her book will be spent on assistance to some of the poorest groups in the Sandanski region.
This will include food, help to a day care centre for disabled young people, medical equipment for a small clinic, school items for Roma children, wood for elderly people for the winter, as well as providing for the needs of Ukrainian refugees currently living in a church basement.
Solent University graphic design student, Peter Herman, designed the cover art for the book, and is another member of the group travelling to Bulgaria.
For his fundraising, he is attempting a 'Dipathlon', and will be aiming to dip his head and swim in the sea in 50 of the Island’s beaches/bays in just one day.
Scheduled for June 16, he is hoping for warm weather.
