Isle of Wight band Wet Leg are celebrating today (Friday) after their self-titled debut album topped the UK album charts in its first week of release and we couldn't be more excited for them!
They beat the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Father John Misty to the number one spot, pushing Olivia Rodrigo and Ed Sheeran down the charts.
The news was announced live on Radio 1 by BBC DJ Scott Mills.
It has been confirmed the band have outsold the rest of the Top 5 combined, to earn the second-biggest opening week for any chart-topping album in 2022 so far, after Central Cee’s 23.
Celebrating their success, Wet Leg told OfficialCharts.com: "We just want to say thanks to all of our fans that have bought the record, and that means we can be Number 1.
"Thank you for this!"
So today we found out that our debut album has placed at number one in the UK album charts!! It’s been such an unexpected journey for us hobbits so to find our shmalbum at number 1 is incredible!! We are lost for words and left feeling like we’re wearing our mums high heels 👠🥹 pic.twitter.com/1KJJwMaGdA

The band who, it appears, can do no wrong, are also fourth in the Official Irish Album Charts, with only Olivia Rodrigo's Sour, Ed Sheeran's =, and Little Mix's Between Us keeping them off the top spot.
In Ireland, Wet Leg, which was released on April 8, charted higher than brand new albums by the Red Hot Chili Peppers!
It is impossible to overstate the meteoric rise of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, who are Platform One Music College alumni.
In October, the County Press published an exclusive interview with the pair who told us their first gig was at the Isle of Wight Festival in 2019, to about 15 friends.
They returned in 2021, this time to the Big Top and are due back again in 2022.
They have racked up tv credits including Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show, Later...with Jools Holland and The Late Late Show with James Cordon, propelling them to success on both sides of the Atlantic; through Spotify, they ended up with a huge advert in New York's iconic Times Square; and they have picked up award nominations galore.
They have been lauded by stars including Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon and punk rocker Iggy Pop, who has been playing them on his Radio 6 Music show.

In June 2021, Wet Leg released their debut single Chaise Longue, after signing to Domino Records.
Chaise Longue was followed up by Wet Dream, featuring a house in its video that was used again for the pair's Live On The Porch concert, which was released on YouTube on Wednesday.
On April 5, the duo released brand new single UR MUM, complete with a bespoke video filmed on the Isle of Wight, directed by rapper and designer Lava La Rue.
It came hot off the heels of Angelica, which featured a self-directed video, filmed at St Catherine’s Lighthouse in Niton.
Wet Leg exclusively revealed their album's new name in a full page advert in the County Press, last year.
The Official UK Album Charts are compiled by the Official Charts Company, based on official sales of downloads, CDs, vinyl, audio streams and video streams.
The Top 40 is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and MTV and the full Top 100 is published exclusively on OfficialCharts.com.
