Ryde Carnival has launched a plan to get more children to take part in carnival, along with its first ever Isle of Wight Walking Festival walk.

A new children's carnival day will take place this year, replacing the traditional children's procession, as the event returns after a two year absence.

Before that, on May 11, walkers will be given the chance to cover some of the carnival route, stopping for talks on the history of Ryde and its carnival -as well as some local pubs.

The Isle of Wight Walking Festival takes place between May 7 and 15 and carnival week returns between August 27 and September 2. Meanwhile, carnival will deliver a week of celebration, including the day for the Isle of Wight's youngest residents, on Saturday August 27, from 11 am to 3 pm.

Jo Morrison Chair of Ryde Carnival Association said: "Last year's events in the town centre were a great success and we know that in recent years the children's carnival parade has been less well attended.

"We want to encourage children and young people to enjoy carnival at the earliest possible opportunity.

"We hope that by holding a children's carnival day, more families can get involved, enjoy the entertainment, spend time in the town centre and most of all have fun celebrating one of Ryde's great events!"
