AN ISLE of Wight student has been selected as the new face of the University of Winchester's 2022/23 academic year.

Ellen Wood, 21, from Cowes, spent her childhood growing up in Northwood, where she attended both Northwood Primary School and Cowes Enterprise College.

After completing her A-levels, Ellen decided to study a degree in Childhood Studies and is currently in her final year at the University of Winchester, with hopes to study for a postgraduate Master’s degree.

Ellen was chosen by the university to become the face of its undergraduate recruitment campaign for 2023.

The university commissioned Surrey-based portrait artist Emma-Leone Palmer to paint a large portrait of Ellen.

Speaking to the County Press, Ellen said: “To be offered the opportunity was an honour and one I feel very privileged and lucky to have been given.

“I couldn't believe it when I got the initial email and the events that have followed since then.

“It was a real pleasure working with the artist, Emma-Leone Palmer, and the team within the university."

The painting is featured on the front cover of the student prospectus and is also used for other university advertising, forming the backdrop for events and open days.

Eagled eyed Islanders can spot Ellen on the side of Southern Vectis buses as part of the University of Winchester's nationwide advertising campaign.

Speaking about seeing her image on Island buses, Ellen said: “It is a very surreal experience and one I'm still getting used to!

“But it's lovely for my family and I to see my image being displayed where I've grown up, especially as this is an opportunity I never expected to come my way.

“It is nice to know that when my final year is completed soon, a part of me will always be at Winchester University.”
