A SHANKLIN man caught shoplifting while on Shopwatch has been sentenced.

Mark Cording, of Atherley Road, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday, February 4.

The 43-year-old admitted theft from a shop in Ryde just before Christmas, on December 23, 2021.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court Cording had entered the Co-operative on Anglesea Street. He selected a bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin, valued at £19, and left the store.

Ms Miller said he had been spoken to and challenged by staff, but made no attempt to pay.

The court heard the bottle was not recovered, Cording had already been on a Shopwatch ban, and had already been made subject of a community order for shoplifting and assault in October.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said Cording had no recollection of the incident but was not challenging the evidence.

He said he had been having difficulties with his accommodation arrangements at the time, which was impacting on his mental health.

Mr Vincent said Cording had been self-medicating with alcohol and relapsed into alcohol misuse.

Cording was given a new, 12-month community order, to include a six-month alcohol treatment requirement and 20 rehabilitation days.

He must pay £19 compensation, and a £95 surcharge.
