Outgoing Isle of Wight Council chief executive John Metcalfe has officially been confirmed as the new boss at Cumbria County Council.
Mr Metcalfe called his new appointment a 'privilege and a pleasure' and said he was returning to an area where had previously lived.
Councillor Stewart Young, Leader of Cumbria County Council said: “I’m delighted with this appointment and I am looking forward to working closely with John on Cumbria County Council’s priorities over the next year.
"He brings with him a range of skills that make him ideal for Cumbria, especially at this moment in time.
"I am looking forward to working with John to lead and support our organisation."

The role brings a salary of £170,000 - around £50,000 more than Mr Metcalfe has been earning on the Isle of Wight.
In an email yesterday (Thursday), revealed by the County Press, John Metlcalfe announced his departure plan.
Calling it a 'difficult decision', he wrote: "I will always be grateful for the many wonderful opportunities and experiences I have had working for the council and will look back on my years here with much pride and fondness."
The Isle of Wight Council has yet to reveal its plans for new management of the multi-million pound local authority.
It said it would release details shortly.
Meanwhile, councillors have been reacting to Mr Metcalfe's departure, calling him 'dedicated' and 'courteous' and a 'mountain' of support.
Under former council leader Jonathan Bacon, John Metcalfe became chief executive here in 2015, after decades at County Hall.
