THE ISLE of Wight's premier cricket ground, Newclose, is to host first class Hampshire cricket again this summer.
Hampshire are set to play their Royal London Cup match against Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Newclose on Tuesday, August 9 — the first time a first class game will have been hosted there since Hampshire played Nottinghamshire in the County Championship in 2019.
It was a historic game — the first time first class county cricket had been played on the Isle of Wight since Hampshire played Worcestershire in Cowes in 1962.
On that occasion, Hampshire cruised to a comfortable victory, in front of record crowds at Newclose.
Hugh Griffiths, a trustee at Newclose County Cricket Ground, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Hampshire back to Newclose — and the Isle of Wight — after a successful County Championship match in 2019.
"It’s always an honour to host Hampshire and we hope the fans and players from both teams will enjoy playing at Newclose as much as they did three years ago.”
Giles White, Hampshire's director of cricket, echoed his sentiments.
He said: "Our championship match at Newclose in 2019 showed that it’s a great wicket and that the players really enjoyed the facility and the support they received.
"The feedback from fans on the ground was really positive, with plenty of space for supporters, so we’re pleased to be returning.
"I’m sure it’ll be another great occasion.”
