Witnesses to a serious crash on the main road to East Cowes are being sought by police.

Emergency crews remain on the scene - at the junction of Whippingham Road and East Cowes Road.

Whippingham Road is closed, from the Racecourse Roundabout to Folly Late.

The Isle of Wight County Press has been told that two cars and a van are involved.

Hampshire Constabulary was called just after 1.10pm, to reports of a collision.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Crews from Newport and East Cowes are also on the scene.

Isle of Wight County Press readers say the diversion, through Alverstone and Wootton is heavily congested.

HGVs are not able to take this route due to the narrow roads. At least one has parked up at Whippingham, to await the road reopening.

Bus routes are diverted.

Hampshire Constabulary said: "We would also ask that any witnesses to the collision phone 101 with reference 0861 of today’s date.

"We will provide more information when we are in a position to do so. Thank you for your patience as we deal with this incident."
