A MEMBER of the public found a piece of possible ordnance at Shanklin Beach yesterday (New Year's Eve).
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to the scene after the discovery was reported to emergency services.
The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD) were informed.
The EOD team were unable to attend before the incoming tide covered the possible ordnance, so the Bembridge team remained on the beach until the discovery was covered.
A spokesperson from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "Members of the public are asked to report anything that looks unusual straight away by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard and not to touch or move the item or items."
Coastguard teams returned to the beach today (New Year’s Day) to conduct further investigations.
