Actors Dame Judi Dench and Brian Blessed are leading celebrity tributes to Isle of Wight journalist John Hannam, who died aged 80 on Wednesday, September 22.

The interviewer was know for his chats with the stars of stage and screen and, in 2019, was asked to interview Dame Judi live on stage.

The star, who has appeared in Shakespeare productions, James Bond films and as Queen Victoria, and who is known for her theatre, tv and film roles, told the County Press: "Oh how very much missed John Hannam will be.

"Being interviewed by John was more like a conversation between friends.

"I feel very lucky to have known him."

Also paying tribute was Flash Gordon, Star Wars and Z-Cars actor Brian Blessed OBE.

The star of stage and screen said: "John was a delight, a man after my own heart and we got on tremendously.

"He was very kind, caring and compassionate and a true professional.

"He will be sorely missed."

Entertainer Jimmy Cricket also paid his respects to the much loved journalist.

The comedian has previously visited Shanklin Theatre and, in 2008, helped John present a fundraising cheque to Isle of Wight breast care nurses - including the sister of John's late wife, Heather.

Jimmy Cricket wrote: "Whether writing or broadcasting, John had a passion for live theatre that enthused everyone around him.

"His legendary interviews with the greats in the world of show business, will be enjoyed by future generations.

"Condolences to his children Sean and Caroline, and partner Bertie."
