A NEWPORT man found by police after suffering a seizure and collapsing to the ground has been fined for possession of sedatives he had not been prescribed.
Robert Burnett, of Godric Road, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (September 28).
The 37-year-old admitted possession of a Class C drug — namely benzodiazepine — on September 13, 2021.
Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court police had attended Burnett's address in the early hours of the morning after being called to Newport.
She said a search was carried out and three boxes of benzodiazepine were found at his home, for which Burnett had no prescription.
Oscar Vincent, defending, said Burnett had a long history of suffering from seizures which caused him to lose consciousness and collapse.
He said Burnett had been walking home on the night in question when he suffered a seizure, fell to the floor and hit his head.
The court heard an off-duty police officer found him, which Burnett was thankful for, and phoned for further police assistance.
Mr Vincent said benzodiazepine helped Burnett with his seizures, and he was able to source them from a friend.
Burnett was fined £40 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
A current community order imposed on Burnett for battery was left to run.
