Across the UK, organisations took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September 24, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

This annual event raises vital funds for Macmillan and there were some charity coffee mornings here on the Isle of Wight.

The first ever Macmillan coffee morning happened way back in 1990, and it was such a success that the charity has continued it every year since.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning has raised more than £290 million for Macmillan, and in 2020, they raised in excess of £10 million — the charity hopes to top that this year.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is also the perfect chance to catch up over a cuppa and a slice of something delicious for a great cause.

The Eye Department at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport held a Macmillan coffee morning, organised by ophthalmic technician Danni Potts.

Danni, of Newport, wanted to support Macmillan as it is a charity close to many of the department team members’ hearts, as they all knew people who had, or have, cancer.

Danni encouraged some of her colleagues to give her a hand and this year’s keen bakers included porter Steven Woodward, nurse Elissa Wood, orthoptist Clare Carney, nurse practitioner Sanchia Chiverton and health care assistant, Rachel Adams.

It’s not the first time they have done something for Macmillan — every year they do a bake-off challenge for the charity, and each year the winner gets a bottle of prosecco as their hard-earned prize.

Also cooking up a storm for charity was the team at the East Cowes branch of well-known Isle of Wight estate agents, Hose Rhodes Dickson.

Peter Barfoot and Jennie Abrook both baked cakes — together with some help from Peter’s mum.

They welcomed a stream of visitors to the office in Castle Street throughout the day and collected £55.25 for Macmillan.

Peter said: “We have done Macmillan coffee mornings before in the Newport office.

“East Cowes is quite a new branch, so we haven’t done one here before, but it was a success and so we are hoping to have one in the East Cowes office next year too.”
