A COUPLE who met Norman Wisdom at their engagement party in Ryde have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
Poppy and Ted Higgin, both 82, of Lower Bettesworth Road, Ryde, met while they were both nursing at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
They got engaged the following year and to celebrate, they held a small party with friends at Spencer Inn on Union Street.
Norman Wisdom was filming on the Island at the time and they found themselves on the table next to his. When he left, Poppy was asked whether she would like to keep his cup and saucer as a keepsake and she has them to this day.
Poppy and Ted were married on September 16, 1961, at St Peter’s Church, Seaview, and spent their honeymoon in Ilfracombe, Devon.
Ted worked as an operating theatre technician at Ryde Hospital and they spent most of their married life living in Haylands.
They have three children, Lynn, Andrew and Ali, and five grandchildren, Shannon, Sam, Dan, Tom and Sophie.
They celebrated 60 years of marriage with family and friends at a party organised by the care team at The Elms Nursing Home, Bembridge, who gave them a wonderful day to remember.
