A RYDE man who punched and kicked a hospital security guard was found guilty in his absence after failing to attend his trial.

Frederick Medway, 29, of St John's Road, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (September 21) and admitted failing to surrender, on September 17.

At a previous hearing, Medway failed to attend his trial and was found guilty in absence of assault by beating of an emergency worker and using threatening, abusive or insulting words, on February 23.

Prosecutor, Liam Hunter, told the court Medway had attended St Mary's Hospital with suggestions he had overdosed on Diazapam.

He said he was seen by a doctor, and later became disruptive, demanding medication.

When he was asked to leave, and an attempt was later made to make him leave, Mr Hunter said Medway kicked a security guard in the leg and punched him in the face.

Medway was restrained, and shouted abuse on police arrival, telling his victim he would kill him.

Oscar Vincent, defending, told the court Medway had a number of vulnerability issues affecting him at the time.

He said he was involved in a catastrophic road traffic collision a few years ago, and had suffered life-changing injuries.

Mr Vincent said Medway had been in constant pain ever since, and had been taken to hospital via ambulance after overdosing on Diazapam.

He only vaguely remembered speaking to a doctor.

Mr Vincent said Medway had acted in a highly emotional manner, that necessitated security intervention.

Medway was in breach of three court orders, and had surrendered to police on Tuesday morning.

His case was adjourned for an update from his offender manager and was due to appear in court again yesterday (Thursday).

He was granted unconditional bail.
