Islanders cut off the electricity and used a fire extinguisher to tackle a fire in a refrigeration until in Total last night.

Employees working at the affected business, along with a neighbour, leapt into action before the arrival of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue crews from Freshwater and Yarmouth.

The firefighters then ensured the fire was out and the unit had cooled before standing down.

In a social media post, Freshwater Fire Station said: "All of these fast actions prevented the incident being much worse than it could have been."
