FRESHWATER Fire Station has shared the details of a crash in Totland yesterday (Wednesday), in which one of the casualties was known to the crew.
The team attended a two-vehicle road traffic collision on The Avenue at approximately 4pm, and had to remove the roof of a car and free its driver, who had suffered minor injuries.
The casualty — a relative of one of Freshwater's crew members — was taken to hospital and is now recovering well.
Speaking after the incident, a spokesperson for the Freshwater crew said: "One of the hardest things about living in the community we serve is that occasionally, we attend incidents where a family member, relative or loved one is injured.
"We are lucky in the fire service to have procedures, protocols and excellent support in place for such occurrences, but it is still a gut wrenching feeling when you arrive at an incident to see a family member in distress.
"Yesterday, we attended a two-vehicle road traffic collision in Totland, requiring a roof removal and long board extrication to free the driver, who was medically trapped.
"Thankfully, the driver — a relative of one of our crew members — is now home from hospital with minor injuries and recovering well.
"We wish her well as she continues to recover."
