AN ISLE of Wight man who assaulted his own mother and exposed himself to a man, among other offences, has been sentenced.

Anthony Serjent, of no fixed address, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday (September 10).

At a previous hearing on August 12, the 43-year-old admitted exposing his genitals to a man, assaulting him by beating, and causing intentional, racially aggravated, harassment, alarm and distress, by using insulting words and behaviour, on August 10.

He also previously admitted causing two offences of criminal damage to a lampshade and wall on June 14, and assaulting his own mother by beating, on June 16, in Godshill.

Further admissions were made for causing criminal damage to a light fitting at the Department of Work and Pensions, Broadlands House, Newport, on July 15, and shoplifting two kitchen knives from TK Maxx in Newport, on July 16.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court police were called on June 16, two days after Serjent had assaulted his mother.

She said the victim and Serjent had been living together, and Serjent had begun to rant and ramble at her.

The court heard he became verbally and physically abusive, pushing his mother onto a bed, pinning her down with his knees, and slapping her across the face twice. He threatened to come back and kill her if she told his brother or the police.

Further details of Serjent's offending were not shared in open court, but were contained in a pre-sentence report made available to magistrates.

Mark Dodd, defending, said Serjent had been in custody since early August and had refrained from alcohol in that period, feeling much more clear headed.

He said he had no intention of 'blotting his copybook' upon release, and realised he needed to help himself.

The court heard Serjent self-medicated with alcohol, realised he made a fool of himself, and wanted to make amends.

He said his mother was his best friend and he wanted her to be proud of him again.

Mr Dodd told magistrates he stole the knives because he was trying to get back into work as a chef.

He said the indecent exposure matter was not sexually motivated, but conceded he did wave his penis about after urinating.

Mr Dodd said placing him on the Sex Offenders' Register would cause untold problems, particularly if he's homeless.

Serjent was given an 18-month community order, to include a 12-month alcohol treatment requirement, 20 rehabilitation days and 250 hours of unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay costs of £255 and a £95 surcharge.
