Data collection is getting underway by the six Isle of Wight schools hit by a ransomware attack.

Some lost access to their websites and all data, while others were also impacted by the major cyber crime.

As the Isle of Wight County Press first reported earlier this month, Isle of Wight Education Federation sites Medina College, Carisbrooke College and the Island VI Form were locked out of their websites and data when it was encrypted by cyber criminals.

Barton and Hunnyhill primaries in Newport and Lanesend Primary in Cowes were also affected.

It means there is a different process for something that normally happens at the start of term, to ensure schools have information about their pupils, because access to all of the schools’ recorded information has been frozen.

Some data has been shared by the Isle of Wight Council, in line with agreements.

That includes some information previously gathered from parents and carers of pupils.

But because email addresses for the schools have been suspended, parents who do not receive contact (due to changes in circumstances, since earlier contact information was collected) are asked to get in touch.

How to contact your child's school:

• Hunnyhill Primary School — through Class Dojo.

• Lanesend Primary School —  caroline.sice@lanesendpri.iow.sch.uk; carrie.almond@lanesendpri.iow.sch.uk

• Barton — office@bartonpri.iow.sch.uk

• Isle of Wight Education Federation (IWEF) — Email enquiries about the incident to data@iwef.org.uk. For all other school enquiries, please use carisbrooke@iwef.org.uk, medina@iwef.org.uk, or viform@iwef.org.uk

The Isle of Wight Council says it is continuing to work with the schools, police and a cyber security firm to find out what might be done to retrieve the lost data.

Meanwhile, it says the schools are focused on ensuring the start of term runs as smoothly as possible.
