A GROUP of 'concerned residents' has been set up to oppose next year's Isle of Wight Road Races.

"Isle of Wight Concerned Residents" is against the motorcycle race which will see public roads closed between April 20 and 23 next year if permission is granted.

Organisers of the races have begun a six-week public consultation process, where the format, timings and impact of the event will be discussed. One public meeting is set for Thursday (August 12) at Wilberforce Hall in Brighstone.

The preferred course is ‘Chale Course’ which runs as a circuit between Chale, Chale Green, Kingston, Shorwell and Brighstone, comprising 12.4 miles. The course is identical to that announced by the now-suspended Diamond Races, and will incorporate Military Road.

A poster sent around by those opposed to the event lists their concerns.

They suggest the roads could be closed for three weeks and claim 'residents will be unable to leave home, carers unable to make visits, the no12 bus disrupted'.

They are concerned about bikes at speeds of up to 200mph going through narrow residential lanes and villages with no pavements.

They are concerned there is a year-round threat of bikers trying out the route, which they claim is already happening.

Other fears are the congestion caused by 40,000 spectators, injuries putting strain on the NHS, increased pollution, and the event being detrimental to tourism (citing visitors coming to the Island for natural beauty and tranquillity).

Those in favour of the event believe it will increase and benefit tourism by bringing more people to the Island.

The objectors urge people to write to MP Bob Seely, and relevant town and Isle of Wight Council councillors.
