THE RNLI inshore lifeboat centre in East Cowes held a naming and dedication of service ceremony for a new D class lifeboat last week.
The major donors, Jane and Mike Stephenson, handed the boat to the care of the RNLI and Mark Dowie, chief executive, accepted the boat on behalf of the RNLI.
The £65,000 fully inflatable D Class was christened by the couple, Buzz II. They explained that the name, Buzz I, was already taken, being the tender of their boat.
The D Class is ideally suited for rescues close inshore.
Chris Hooper, one of the boatbuilders, gave a brief description of the capabilities of the D class and this was followed by the service of dedication led by the Rev Amanda Collinson.
Operations manager, Glyn Ellis, told guests: “It’s a proud and satisfying moment to see the completion of this latest lifeboat, which will be joining the RNLI’s relief fleet.”
Cowes Concert Band played several rousing numbers, and the proceedings were rounded off with maritime–related songs, sung with gusto by the Slipshod Singers, including Let the Lower Lights be Burning and the lifeboat song Home from the Sea.
The Slipshod Singers have sung at many of these lifeboat naming events and held concerts with all the proceeds going to the RNLI.
In recognition of its efforts and dedication, Mark Dowie presented them with a certificate of merit.
