More than a month's worth of rain fell on Ryde in just two hours.

Ventnor's Shore Hill (known as Cascades Road) cracked and was closed to traffic, and had since reopened with temporary traffic lights in place.

Videos showed waterfalls cascading down the town's steep cliffs. 

The paddling pool was deluged by water and even the sea itself turned brown, because of the mud that was washed away by the rain.

Elsewhere, roads in the Ryde area were impassable and Coach Lane in Brading was closing, to allow for carriageway repairs.

Meanwhile, there was a landslide at Wheelers Bay, between Bonchurch and Ventnor, which damaged a boat and crushed two engines.

The bad weather came without warning, during the morning rush hour, although the Met Office later issued a thunderstorm alert for the region.

A flood alert, issued on Monday morning, was quickly upgraded to a flood warning for Monktonmead Brook, in Ryde.

The Boat House pub in Seaview was among the homes and businesses to experience flooding - shown in these pictures (above) by Isle of Wight County Press Camera Club member Charlie Smallman.

It came just a week after the catastrophic flooding in Binstead, which required help from the fire service.
