A RYDE woman who crashed her car into two parked cars while nearly three times over the drink-drive limit has been banned from the road.

Lorna Headington, of Benett Street, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (July 13).

The 56-year-old admitted drink driving on June 18, this year.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, told the court police were called to Playstreet Lane at around 6pm, after receiving a report of a vehicle collision in Ryde.

She said, on arrival, they discovered a Honda Jazz had lost control, driven onto a residential drive and struck two stationary vehicles.

Police found Headington in the drivers seat, and she had to be freed from the vehicle by ambulance and fire crews.

Mrs Smout said she was assessed at the scene, appeared to be uninjured, but was sent to A&E for a further check.

The court heard Headington was later asked by police to provide a sample of breath for roadside analysis.

Mrs Smout said, as soon as the requirement was made, Headington put her head down and admitted drinking earlier in the day.

She was arrested and taken from the hospital to the custody centre, where she registered an alcohol breath reading of 102 microgrammes. The legal drink-drive limit is 35.

Mrs Smout said Headington was a woman of previous good character, with no previous convictions.

James Cameron, defending, said Headington, a carer, pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

He said she accepted she had drunk too much, compounded by the fact she hadn't eaten much that day.

Mr Cameron said Headington's mum had died 18 days before the incident, she had been having issues with the funeral arrangements, and consumed alcohol as a coping mechanism.

He told the bench she was disappointed in herself and had since referred herself to Inclusion.

Headington was disqualified from driving for 25 months, and made subject of a 12-month community order, to include 80 hours of unpaid work.

She was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £95 surcharge.
