Alverstone Shute is closed and Southern Water says it is working 'closely' with the Environment Agency to minimise the impact to the environment after a wastewater spill.

Repairs are progressing after the incident yesterday afternoon.

The utility firm says tankers are being used to maintain flow.

Residents can continue to use bathrooms and kitchens.

Southern Water said: "Alverstone Shute will remain closed to protect the safety of our workers until the repair is completed.

"We are working to do this as quickly as possible."
