THERE has been a shake-up at County Hall as the formerly ruling Conservative party of the Isle of Wight Council lose their majority.
Following Thursday's election, results came through thick and fast on Friday which saw the downfall of the leading party — the Conservatives losing four seats and enough to cost them control.
It included the prized seat of their leader, Dave Stewart, who spoke before the official results were declared, congratulating Cllr Claire Critchison for winning the seat but expressing his disappointment.
Despite gaining some new wards, like Mountjoy and Shide and Central Rural it did not get the blues across the line to maintain their majority.
Overall results for the authority see 18 Conservatives, 13 Independent, 2 Green, 2 Island Independent Network, 1 Labour, 1 Our Island, 1 Liberal Democrat and 1 Vectis Party forming the 39 seats to make up the Isle of Wight Council.
No one party has an overall majority — needing 20 seats — meaning right now we do not know who will lead the authority.
Talks to form a coalition between groups and individual candidates will be underway to see if an agreement of sorts can be reached.
The Isle of Wight Council's annual meeting is set to be held on May 26, when a new cabinet, leader, chairman and vice-chairman of the council will be set.
Turnout in this year's election was 36.93 per cent, down on the previous 2017 election.
While we wait to hear what that means, and who will be in power, here is the full list of how the votes turned out: (winners highlighted in bold)
