A popular footbridge, between Sandown and Shanklin, has been lifted onto the back of a lorry for off-site refurbishment in a complex overnight operation.

The metal structure that runs alongside Skew Bridge, in Lake, is due to be returned in June.

It is used to cross the Island Line train tracks.

Last night, a rail-mounted crane lifted the nine-tonne footbridge from its foundations.

The road was closed for three days for the operation and diversions were in place.

It has since reopened but temporary traffic lights will remain, to allow pedestrians to get across safely.

Earlier this year, work was carried out on nearby Alresford Bridge.
