A MAN has been sentenced after causing more than £8,000 of damage to a room at his accommodation.

Scott Thick, 24, now of Carter Street, Sandown, admitted causing criminal damage at Fellowship House last August, Calverts Hotel in January, and to a police cell while he was placed in custody.

He re-appeared in front of Island magistrates on April 12, where he was given a 12-month community order, to include 20 rehabilitation days.

He must also pay compensation of £250.

At the previous court appearance, prosecutor, Ann Smout, said Thick had been seen by a staff member to cause damage to Fellowship House, after he had woken up and reported he had a dislocated shoulder.

Staff had attempted to arrange medical care for him.

Thick became distressed and aggressive when he was told there was a three-hour wait for an ambulance and caused damage to plasterboard near the reception area.

He then punched a fire alarm panel at the entrance, which would cost around £7,000 to repair.

Mrs Smout said during a similar incident on January 4 of this year, Thick had trashed his own room at Calverts Hotel in Newport, where he had been staying for a couple of weeks.

She said Thick had been told his room would no longer be available and he reacted angrily.

He ripped radiators from the wall and punched holes in plasterboard.

He also smashed a television and a bath panel was partially detached, causing £1,717 of damage in total.

Staff phoned the police the following morning and Thick was arrested.

While in custody, Mrs Smout said Thick used his handcuffs to scratch a wooden wall, causing damage to paintwork.

James Cameron, for Thick, who has has ADHD, anxiety and is diagnosed with autism, said Thick saw his mother only sporadically, hadn't seen his doctor in more than four months, and was concerned he was not engaging with anyone supporting him.

He said Thick needed support to prevent such an incident happening again.
