The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed the amount of money it has been given by the Ministry of Justice to manage the roads on the Isle of Wight's prison estates.
On April 2, the County Press issued a challenge to the council to tell us how much we were getting, so Islanders could make up their minds whether it was a good deal or not.
We now know it is £6.3 million.
This will be used to bring the prison estate roads up to scratch ahead of a possible redevelopment of the Camp Hill prison site.
Isle of Wight Conservative group leader Cllr Dave Stewart confirmed and welcomed the receipt of £6.3million from the Ministry of Justice.
Cllr Stewart said, “ As I previously confirmed, the Conservative administration had secured millions of pounds to be invested in the Camp Hill Estate.
"This will make a significant difference to the lives of residents at Camp Hill. It is a considerable sum of money but the council will need to spend it wisely to address all of the required works to bring the estate to a good standard.
"Planning for these works will begin in earnest following May’s election, but will be informed by a community consultation with the residents concerned.
"I hope this will be the start of a long term partnership with the Ministry of Justice to make best use of its surplus assets at Camp Hill for the benefit of the whole of the Isle of Wight."
