Weeks of work has started on the main road into, and out of, East Cowes.

It means a closure on York Avenue and diversions are in place until April.

Resurfacing will be carried out in sections.

Island Roads says it is aiming to complete the work before the start of the main tourism season.

However some school children from East Cowes will now be among those facing busier than normal routes and diversions, when they return to class on March 8.

The contractor said resurfacing would be overnight, but strengthening of the foundations will require deep excavations.

Isle of Wight County Press:

A 24-hour-a-day road closure is now in place.

In June 2020, a short closure of the route led to 'gridlock' as Red Funnel traffic arrived on the Isle of Wight and led to long queues, in and out of the town. Island Roads said it was for sewer work and strengthening.

Today (Monday), a closure is in place from the Hawthorn Meadows roundabout to Osborne Garage.

Traffic, including Southern Vectis buses, are diverting along Beatrice Avenue.

Around 3,000 square metres of road will be dug up, to a depth of over two feet.

It will be carries out in four phases, over 64 days, with six nights (split into two phases) for reconstruction.

Resurfacing is currently scheduled for between June 2 to 9, however it is hoped the road will be fully opened for the May Bank Holiday.

Arrangements will also be made to ensure there is no impact on local elections on May 6.

Medina College issued an travel alert last week.
