THE RRS Sir David Attenborough — a research vessel — will be undertaking sea trials in the Western Solent tomorrow (Thursday).

The ship is owned by the Natural Environment Research Council and operated by the British Antarctic Survey for the purposes of both research and logistic support.

Captain Will Whatley is the youngest ever captain at BAS, and is from Southampton, so he is on 'home surf' tomorrow.

The ship's name was famously put to the British people to choose, and they came up with winning moniker Boaty McBoatface.

It was decided to instead name the ship after Sir David Attenborough.

It is currently in Torbay (3pm Wednesday).

The RRS Sir David Attenborough is spending two weeks testing anchoring, manoeuvring and dynamic positioning, as well as other engineering systems, such as fresh water making, that cannot be tested in port.

The new polar ship will transform UK research in the polar regions. Its missions are critical for understanding and making sense of our changing climate.

After the sea trials, the ship will return to Holyhead, before heading to the Arctic for extensive ice trials.

In November will make its maiden voyage to Antarctica.
